Pope Leo Cleared for South American Pilgrimage After Cancer Battle

October 27, 2026 • 2 min read

The Vatican has officially confirmed that Pope Leo will proceed with his upcoming tour of South America despite recently undergoing surgery for lung cancer. The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed after doctors discovered a localized tumor on the lower part of his right lung. Following a successful ninety minute procedure in Rome on October 13, surgeons have declared the outcome absolutely satisfactory, noting there are no medical reasons to delay the journey.

Scheduled from November 6 to 17, the extensive itinerary will take the Pope through Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. He plans to visit ten different cities, beginning with Montevideo before moving on to Buenos Aires and eventually spending six days in Peru. For Pope Leo, the trip is more than just a diplomatic mission; it is a return to a region where he spent nearly three decades working between missions in various Peruvian departments and the United States.

In Peru, where Catholicism remains deeply rooted, Cardinal Castillo expects the visit to focus heavily on grassroots engagement. The agenda includes meetings with indigenous communities, women managing local community kitchens, and youth groups. The Archbishop of Lima emphasized the personal connection the Pope shares with these regions, particularly given his history living in Chiclayo and holding Peruvian citizenship.

While the long distance travel remains intact, the Vatican noted that some adjustments have been made to ensure a full recovery. On the advice of medical professionals, a planned trip to Assisi later this month has been canceled so that the Pope can prioritize rest. Despite this minor setback, those close to him say he is approaching the South American voyage with immense joy and gratitude for the global outpouring of prayer since his diagnosis.
